Football Tips Pass Blocking

Pass blocking is only similar to run blocking because it’s blocking. There is a lot more technique required to pass block as to run blocking having pure strength may allow you to get away with a few things however with pass blocking if you don’t have proper technique your likely to give up a lot of sacks thus be sitting on the bench or perhaps not on the team at all.

Pass Blocking Technique

When pass blocking it is important to know all of your options however I will not go over cutting because today most athletes are able to recoil after getting cut down to the ground so I will focus on the most important fundamentals which is to fit, jam and control the defender. When pass blocking it is important to your use your hands and not putting your body outward. When pass blocking you will likely to be taking a certain amount of steps back (this depends on formation and play called). As you step back your hands must almost immediately be jamming outward, though depending on the rush it may not be necessary. However you must be in position and ready to jam, the idea of pass blocking is that you know the play called and where the quarterback is likely to throw which means you know how long your quarterback will need to throw. Ideally you should be protecting the quarterback for as long as he has the ball however if you have a scrambler you should have a timer in your head letting you know if your qb is about to take off. You should see him when he takes off and if he is in trouble unless the defender went through you it is important you don’t let another defender through by leaving your assignment and trying to bail the qb out. Now if you let the defender through you have to go after him not pushing the defender in the back or holding but trying to be in position if the defender slips or has to turn and run to catch your qb. If a defender gets past you and you get the chance to block him again, let’s say your qb is gifted enough to know to step inside the pocket or sprint away the defender should be free game for you to plant him one.

The most important thing to remember though when pass blocking it is a team effort you should be able to read a defense to know whose blitzing and which lineman is assigned to pick that defender up, as well their maybe a shift in pass protection sometime before the ball is hiked, and because defenders will blitz and run stunts everyone that is due to pass block plays a role in making sure no one gets to the qb so lineman can’t be selfish if one guy doesn’t know their assignments it could be a long day. There are many drills to practice some are the Two man Twist Drill which helps to work on passing off the defenders in zone schemes, when doing this drill you must keep your shoulders completely square. There is also the three men Twist Drill designed to pick up three men down, again shoulders should be square and vision must be kept wide for loop defenders. There are many different drills and techniques though it all depends on the team the coach and the plays called both on offense and defense. The more knowledgeable you are about these different drills and skills the better an offensive lineman should have the eyes of a quarterback. As a pass blocker you don’t want to wait until your qb tells you this is coming you should be calling it out for him if anything seeing it’s your job to protect him not the other way around.

Strength Training for Pass blocking

Upper Body-When training yourself to become a better pass blocker there are a few things you can do. One being the Jammer machine in the weight room. The Jammer machine is a great exercise because it causes you to bend your knees and extend your arms. When using the Jammer you must remember to stay in an athletic position, knee’s slightly bent your butt in almost a sitting position and your hands in front of you. When extending always use enough weight to make explosive movements, a lot of people think and may tell you gaining muscle or strength means putting on as much weight as possible but it only drains you making you weaker for the next exercise on your work out plan. You want to choose weight you can extend out and as well make explosive choppy movements. When pass blocking you must make movements sort of like you’re doing pushups, that’s if you don’t want to become an excessive holder. So the Jammer prepares you to do just that. Of course great upper body training is the bench now no matter if you’re trying to be a full back, tight end, or offensive lineman the bench is a great practice tool. Of course great upper body training is the bench now no matter if you’re trying to be a full back, tight end, or offensive lineman the bench is a great practice tool. You want to be able to lift 225 lbs certainly and you want to be able to lift it as much as you can. You should always be trying to build up your strength on that amount of weight. A great way to do this is to lift just underneath 225 maybe like 200 or 205 you want to do this 2/3rd’s of the days you work out. Once you lift on the other 1/3 you would want to lift a bit over 225 maybe like 250 if you can’t lift 250 lift towel bench styles.

Towel bench is a great way to improve your overall strength always use a spotter no matter how easy you may think the weight is. Advice on reaching goals if you want to lift 225 40 times you should be lifting the lower weight (205) about 35 times warm up of 10 and then split your next three sets up with the remaining 20. You will be taking breaks in between your lifts but it is giving you the endurance you will need to lift 40 times as you work out more it will become easier to do. When lifting the 250 you want to do 25-30 reps again doing a 10 rep warm up.

Lower Body-The lower body area is just as important as the upper body in fact it maybe more important sense your lower body can get a lot stronger than you’re upper. Great work outs to do would include Squats, Deadlight, and power cleans and leg press. The reason the lower body is important because lineman must always keep their feet moving that’s how defensive lineman are trained so if you’re going to move them you will have to be doing the same. You have to be able to drive your defender where ever you want him to go. When doing lower body it is very important to stretch multiple times, stretch between sets and between starting and ending your complete work out. Stretching is good because it helps improve your flexibility and when blocking period flexibility will increase durability. When lifting the lower body you don’t want to lift your max all day or really at all. You want to do the same as the upper body be able to make explosive movements you will get use to the weight you are working with and then it will be time to increase the weight. Your overall max will improve greatly however it’s really about developing the nasty streaks with your explosiveness.

Dieting

What you eat is very important there are many athletes learning they have diabetes on the professional level and in college unaware their whole lives and not having any problems with it. You must be careful not to eat too much greasy foods especially if you want to build muscle. But dieting helps not only your ability to build muscle but also your ability to perform. Eating a lot of carbohydrates before and after work outs is a good idea because carbohydrates supplies your body it’s energy. However the diet you should choose varies upon position and upon the person and their own goals. Make sure that you choose a diet plan that best fits your personal goals. Choosing just any plan may slow up your progress, it is important to remember what you eat either helps your weightlifting or kills it. So be careful and research well.

Football Tips Run Blocking

When learning to run block one must first understand that it takes aggression beyond physical ability. You must learn to get in what’s called a nasty mode, when coaches and scouts look for lineman they usually want one that has long nasty streaks. This means they are aggressive and control the line of scrimmage they pretty much own the guy sitting across from them. Now granted it does take strength to have such a streak however the better your technique the less strength you will need. In other words work on strength and technique and you will become unstoppable. Using nothing but strength will tire you out faster in a game meaning you won’t have streaks maybe a play or two.

Air Raid Offense

Being a graduate of BYU I have had a chance to study more the Air Raid passing system in football. In my opinion this is one of the easiest ways to pass and not confuse your players too much. Another reason I like the Air Raid is that you can run many of the same plays out of different formations. There are some plays where the routes will always be open. Let me give you an example of such a play.

Below is 50 check shallow that BYU uses. The first read on this play is actually the middle backer. The main route is not the post but actually the dig done by the H-back. As Coach Anae puts it, the dig is always open. What you will start to see is that safeties will come up hard on the dig which opens the post deep. The X route would be a check route to see if the safeties are coming up. The Z and F routes are the last routes of the progression but if you notice that the defense is having trouble defending those two routes on the backside you can let your QB know to look for those routes.

This is what I love about the Air Raid passing system. Quick short routes, that will allow you to be able to get rid of the ball quickly. The defense has pressure put on it to defend and the reads are easy. If you are looking for a fun offense that is easy to learn. This would be a good offense to start out teaching in my opinion.

Auburn Hires Gene Chizik

Auburn has hired Gene Chizik as its head football coach, The Birmingham News and Rivals.com are both reporting.

Chizik was Iowa State's head coach the last two seasons. The Cyclones were 5-19 under Chizik. Iowa State finished 2-10 (0-8 in the Big 12) in 2008.

Chizik was Auburn's defensive coordinator from 2002-2004. He served as Texas' defensive coordinator the two years after that.

Chizik replaces Tommy Tuberville as the Tigers' head coach.

Auburn has also interviewed Tulsa coach Todd Graham, Ball State coach Brady Hoke, Louisiana Tech's Derek Dooley, Buffalo coach Turner Gill, Georgia assistant Rodney Garner and University of Miami offensive coordinator Patrick Nix, The Birmingham News reports.

Gene Chizik (born December 28, 1961 in Clearwater, Florida) is the current head football coach at Iowa State University, and is now named head football coach at Auburn University. Chizik played linebacker for the University of Florida during the 1981 season, competing in the Peach Bowl. He graduated from Florida in 1985.

He began his coaching career at Seminole High School (Pinellas County, Florida), serving as their defensive coordinator and inside linebacker coach from 1986–1988. He then became a graduate assistant at Clemson from 1988–1989, working with the outside linebackers. During his time at Clemson he coached in the 1988 Citrus Bowl and the 1989 Gator Bowl.

His initial full-time coaching job was as the defensive ends coach at Middle Tennessee State University. He served in this capacity from 1990-1991. His next assignment was at Stephen F. Austin, serving as their linebackers coach from 1992-1995. He was then promoted to the defensive coordinator role, which he held from 1996-1997. He then served as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach for Central Florida from 1998-2001.

While at Central Florida in Orlando, Chizik frequently visited practice sessions of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers studying the Bucs' defensive scheme, the so-called ‘Tampa 2’, developed by then-Bucs head coach Tony Dungy, defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and linebackers coach Lovie Smith. Chizik later employed a very similar scheme at Auburn, where he served again as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach from 2002-04. During this time, he had some of the greatest successes of his career to date. He coached in three bowl games, the 2003 Capital One Bowl, 2004 Music City Bowl, and 2005 Sugar Bowl. He won the 2004 Broyles Award, which is given each year to the top assistant coach in the nation. His 2004 Auburn Tigers football team finished 13-0 that year, won the SEC, was ranked second in the nation, and played in a BCS bowl.

In 2005 he was hired by Texas Longhorns to serve as their co-defensive coordinator, assistant head coach, and linebackers coach. During his time with the Texas Longhorns, the team won the 2005 NCAA Division I-A national football championship by defeating USC in the 2006 Rose Bowl.

In November 2006, Chizik was hired to replace outgoing coach Dan McCarney as head football coach of Iowa State University. Chizik's current contract with ISU was a six-year deal worth a guaranteed $6.75 million. With incentives, the total could have been more than $10 million. I wonder how Auburn will compare?

Crazy NFL Rumours

Yes they were 11-5 last year with Cassel and Bill Belicheat is a genius and can part the Red Sea by raising his personnel and Brady will be back and can treat leprosy by emotive you etc. I have heard it all. I am also not saying that they are not open to be good. They are departures to be very good. Maybe another 11-5 seasons again. I just don't see them as the powerhouse that they were a link of time ago.

First, yes they went 18-0 the last time that Brady was in the burden. They also in my oppinion squeaked through the game against a baged up San Diego and then got outright beaten by the Giants and that monster plea. They wore down, especially on argument. That covered is old and weak. Maybe this year they can cause in Junior Seau and Deacon Jones to add experience to the D. No actual imporvement in an excuse that has become early in the last couple of being.

Also, you have line problems. Yes line problems. Something we know all about in Pittsburgh. They gave up 48 sacks last year. Again, I have seen no true imporvement in the last year or so to a line that is mediocre at best.

Lastly they signed Fred Taylor, the record operation back to have only been to one pro-bowl in the annals of football. Man drape on for a back while I make myself a stiff swig to calm my nerves thinking about having to face the 33 year old Fred Taylor. The Jags let him go due to the cap and made no exertion to re-indicator him, no try to renegotiate his indenture. Why, because heis over the mound, done. Who cares if they got Fred Taylor. I was not impressed with taylor 6 being ago when he was on and off the IR every year and I am not impressed now. I pray they come into Pittsburgh and try to run Taylor at us. Please Mr Belichik eavesdrop, Fred Taylor is the answer, run him early ans regularly to take stress off Tom and Gisele.

Despite the mad ramblings above, I estimate my crux is this, awaiting someone beats the Steelers how can you not say they are the players to beat next year? This is all off time guess and who the hell knows what is open to happen next year. Both the Steelers and Pats could suck, who the hell knows. Nevertheless with no factual losses on the guilty border of the ball, appealing much the same on assault perhaps minus Nate Washington. Where is the obvious deficiency that puts us behind the Pats? Brady's partner is hotter than Ben's child? If Gisele can run a wither send than thin, if not I do not see it.

How to Choose Football Gloves

Football gloves have become a necessary accessory for anybody playing serious football nowadays. Gloves are especially necessary for receivers, linemen, line backers and running backs. Football gloves improve a player’s efficiency while at the same time providing him with a grip on the ball that makes for better performance on the field. If you are kitting yourself out to play football, then buying a pair of good gloves for yourself is imperative. An extremely wide variety of football gloves are available in the market nowadays, and making a choice might be tough. Discussed below are some football glove basics that should help you in taking a decision when it comes to buying football gloves for yourself:

Upper Glove Material: Most of the football gloves available in the market today carry a top of leather, spandex or synthetic leather. If you can afford it, a glove with a leather upper is a good choice because it will last a long time. On the other hand, because of leather being a natural material, the gloves will allow your hands to breathe. As a result, your hands will be comfortable while playing. Another good thing about a leather glove is that it is very flexible, so it will not be hampering either your grip or your performance. Synthetics on the other hand, will not be as comfortable, as flexible or as durable as leather. However, these gloves are much cheaper than gloves with leather backs, and can be used by beginners. In order to have maximum flexibility, you can buy a glove that has an upper made of stretchable material. Nowadays, most running back, receiver and defensive back gloves have uppers made of some or the other kind of spandex material.

Glove Palm Material: The material on the glove’s palm is the one that is responsible for enhancing or decreasing your performance. Generally, football glove palms are either made of latex or cabatta leather. Cabatta leather is a thin leather material that is treated with chemicals that increase tackiness and provide a better ball grip. This leather is extremely soft, flexible and durable. On the other hand, gloves with latex palms might not be as durable. However, latex palms provide the best fit and flexibility, apart from giving a player the best ball grip and tackiness required for playing football. The only drawback is that latex might get slippery in wet weather.

Playing Position: Different kinds of football gloves are available for different playing positions. So while a lineman’s glove should be heavily padded on the top and the wrist, a line backer would benefit from a glove that is heavily padded but at the same time is flexible and soft. It is important that a line backer’s glove has a sticky palm as well. Soft and flexible gloves with a sticky palm are best suited for running backs and receivers while a defensive back’s gloves should not just have the same qualities, but should also be padded on the upper.

Does College Football Need to Have December Madness?

College football has become on of the greatest events in America’s sporting world. The beginning of autumn beauty now has serious competition, as die hard fans from every team in the nation eagerly await college football’s start every year. As great as the college football scene is, many fans are irritated with the current bowl system that is in place. While many of these fans are screaming for a playoff, how many of them have actually conceived the possibility that a playoff could damage the rivalries of college football?

The basis of college football is formed around the huge rivalries, whether it is Alabama and Auburn, or Ohio and Ohio State, or even Florida and Florida State. These rivalries usually occur during the last week of the season and if a playoff system were in place, these games would lose their meaning. With a playoff, college football would be more like the NFL. Most people who watch the NFL know that most playoff spots have been filled coming into the last week, therefore, the games mean nothing. Most teams play their second string players. Imagine a rivalry game that means nothing. The intenseness is replaced with fear of a starter being injured. No possibility of an upset from an in state rival, because who cares, the playoffs are already set. All of the rivalry fire has been lost!

However, the rivalries are not the only essence that would be lost to college football fans. The excitement of every game during the regular season would be diminished. Currently, every game in college football is meaningful. Whether it’s the challenge of actually making a bowl game, or trying to remain in the championship hunt, each and every regular season game means a lot. Many compare college football to college basketball, because basketball has the NCAA tournament. Oh yeah, March Madness is great, and very entertaining, but does anyone know what happened during the regular season? What about major upsets? College football fans know every major upset that occurs during the regular season, but most college basketball fans can not name the upsets, unless they happen during the tournament. Who cares if their team loses during the regular season, as long as they win during the tournament? As great as this tournament is, it steals its greatness from the regular season.

Experts believe that creating a playoff system would eliminate the controversy of the BCS. However, there is even controversy in the NCAA basketball tournament, and 65 teams are allowed to participate in that. If there is an eight team playoff, then the ninth team that got left out could argue that they belong. The same with a sixteen team tournament, the seventeenth team could argue the same point. There will always be controversy, no matter which system is in place.

Another idea is to not determine the National Championship game until after the first four BCS bowl games have been played. This would be fair to the players and schools, but would not be fair to the fans. Most fans who travel to watch their team play in a bowl game, have to save all year to make this trip. However, they could not make two trips for two bowl games. If this system were in place, it would be unfair to the fans. And there would still be controversy as to whichever team gets left out.

The system that is in place now is truly the most fair and balanced of any of the above mentioned systems. Instead of complaining about the current system, why not adapt to it? The weaker conference teams should schedule higher ranked non-conference opponents, instead of non-ranked teams. That way they could prove that they belong in the championship game, instead of crying because they cannot get into the game. This system is by far the most exciting and makes college football what it is today: without it, the regular season of college football would be as exciting as the college basketball season.

The Life of a Black NFL Quarterback

Every year at the NFL draft the debate seemingly always comes up about whether or not a quarterback can lead an NFL offense. Last year it was with Pat White and numerous teams talked about drafting him and moving him to another position. It seems that most of the time this debate is often about black quarterbacks and NFL teams seem to be scared to death to take a chance on one these days. Is this just a negative stigma or is there a legit reason behind this school of thought?

If you look at recent NFL history there have been very few black quarterbacks able to maintain a good level of success throughout their career. I would certainly say that men like Warren Moon, Randall Cunningham, Steve McNair and Donovan McNabb have had a great deal of success at the position. But there have been numerous busts here lately at this spot.

If you just look here recently you have Byron Leftwich, Daunte Culpepper, Charlie Batch, Akili Smith, Mike Vick and Travarius Jackson all with very shaky NFL careers. The verdict is still out on Vince Young and JaMarcus Russell but from the looks of things I doubt they become much of antything. The one young guy in the NFL that I think is coming along is Jason Campbell and interestingly enough his team was trying to dump him this offseason for Mark Sanchez. Was it because he's a black quarterback or did they just really like Mark Sanchez?

I doubt many people out there understand how much extra pressure is put on the typical black quarterback to perform at a high level. There is pressure on any quarterback in the NFL but when you add the racial tension to the situation it goes through the roof. Maybe Pat White will be the guy to lead a new wave into the league and become the next highly successful black quarterback.
